Today, grade 1,2,3 students from Kanata Montessori School (where I teach art once a week) went to our beautiful National Gallery of Canada in Ottawa.
What kind of stories can we see in artworks? How to discover clues that make us understand the story ?
Students learned how to interpret an artwork by focusing on composition, principles of design and observing the cloth, the body language and facial expressions of depicted figures. Our guide told us fascinating facts, legends or stories about the artwork. Students were engaged and made clever comments supported with evidence in the artworks.
The second tour focused on the Group of Seven and Canadian art
We learn how the group was formed and influenced by, what the artists painted as subjects and the locations where they painted.
We looked at the use of colour, brush strokes and composition in their artwork.
